Hiring
How to hire a WordPress developer in Nepal (2026 guide)
Nepal has a large, growing pool of WordPress developers, which is great news if you’re hiring and confusing if you don’t know what to look for. Two developers can quote very different prices for what sounds like the same job, and the difference usually only shows months later. This guide is for businesses in Nepal and for companies abroad hiring a WordPress developer from Nepal.
First, decide what kind of help you need
- A freelancer suits most small and medium websites, WooCommerce stores, and ongoing maintenance. You work directly with the person building your site.
- An agency makes sense when you also need design, copywriting, and project management, or a team working in parallel to a tight deadline.
- An in-house developer is worth it when WordPress is central to your business and there’s a steady stream of work every week.
Be clear about the job too. “Build a new site”, “fix and speed up our existing site”, and “keep our site maintained” need different strengths, and the best person for one isn’t always the best for another.
Where to find WordPress developers in Nepal
- Referrals from businesses whose websites you like. Ask them who built it and how the project went.
- LinkedIn, where you can see a developer’s work history and recommendations from people they’ve worked with.
- The local WordPress community, including WordCamp Nepal and WordPress meetups in Kathmandu, where experienced developers tend to be active.
- Freelance marketplaces, which work, but filter carefully: reviews on small jobs don’t always reflect ability on large ones.
The skills worth checking
- Custom theme and plugin development, not only installing themes and plugins. Ask to see code or a project where they built something from scratch.
- WooCommerce experience if you sell online, including local payment gateways like eSewa, Khalti, and Fonepay.
- Performance: do they know what Core Web Vitals are and how to fix a slow site? See my speed optimization checklist for what good looks like.
- Security basics: updates, backups, user roles, and avoiding nulled (pirated) themes and plugins.
- Technical SEO: clean markup, fast pages, structured data, and sensible URLs.
- Version control and staging: changes should be tested on a staging site, not made live on your production website.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Can you show me two or three sites you built, and tell me exactly what your part was?
- Will you build a custom theme, use a page builder, or customise a ready-made theme? Why?
- Who owns the domain, hosting, and code when the project is finished?
- How do you handle backups, updates, and security after launch?
- What’s included in the price, and what would count as extra work?
- How will we communicate, and how often will I see progress?
Red flags
- The domain or hosting would be registered in the developer’s name, not yours.
- No written scope or agreement, just a single price.
- Premium themes or plugins offered “for free”, which usually means nulled copies that can contain malware.
- No staging site, no backups, and changes made directly on your live website.
- A portfolio of sites that are all slow, broken on mobile, or no longer online.
- A price far below everyone else’s with no clear explanation of what’s left out.
Hiring from abroad?
Many companies in Europe, Australia, and the US work with WordPress developers in Nepal. Nepal Time (UTC+5:45) overlaps with the working day in Europe and Australia, which makes regular calls easy. A few tips make remote work smooth:
- Start with a small, paid trial task before committing to a large project.
- Agree on communication tools and a weekly check-in from day one.
- Keep everything in your own accounts, such as hosting, the Git repository, and premium licences, and give the developer access.
- Pay against milestones rather than all up front or all at the end.
What about price?
Price depends on scope far more than on the hourly rate. I’ve covered typical ranges and the factors behind them in how much a WordPress website costs in Nepal. When comparing quotes, compare what’s included, not just the total.
